Weed Man of Elgin awards $5,000 to local sports team

ELGIN, Ill. - Following a six-month Facebook photo "Like" promotion, the 12-U Hurricanes Fastpitch Softball Team in Lake in the Hills have emerged as the first-place winners of the Weed Man USA Sports Sponsorship program.

The team was awarded $5,000 and a Weed Man Team Hydration Kit during a check presentation ceremony at their game in Leroy Guy Park in Lake in the Hills on Saturday, Sept. 5.

"We love getting involved with our community and we're so excited to hear that a local team was awarded this prize," said Shane Griffith, owner of the Weed Man serving Elgin and many other northwest Chicago suburbs. "Local teams often struggle to receive the necessary funding to keep teams functioning and at their best. This sponsorship will be a much-needed boost to their budget this year."

The online promotion, held from April to August, will supply three sports teams across the country with much needed funding for their equipment, tournaments, staff and training. Each participating team uploaded a team photo to Facebook and was encouraged to promote their photo to gain the most Facebook "Likes." The photos with the most "Likes" out of all participating teams across the nation were named the winners.

The second- and third-prize winners were the Mount Horeb Boys Basketball team from Madison, Wisconsin, and the Front Royal Flames Basketball Team from Winchester, Virginia respectively.
