The build-up of excitement to a Chicago Blackhawks game at the United Center is a technological circus of color and movement and sound on game night. The show begins, as the crowd finds their seats, with fast-paced action on the giant video board above center ice. The music grows to a thunder and the arena lights dim and spotlights and lazer lights streak around like bees, and huge images are projected onto the ice surface as the players come out of the lockerroom. The crowd is energized into a frenzy as the national anthem starts. But for brief moments, there is darkness on the crowd. I caught this fan's glowing cellphone-lit smile out of the corner of my eye before a recent playoff game during one of those moments.
