Elgin Elks honor essay winners

Congratulations to the winners of the Elgin Elks Lodge 737 American Essay Contest.

This year's theme for the essay contest was " What America Means To Me."

Three schools participated in this year's contest. The top three essays from each division (fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades) were selected by their teachers and sent to the Elks Lodge.

A total of 13 essays were received. The Elgin Elks Lodge selected the top three from each division and forwarded them to the North District for judging. Those winners are sent to the Illinois State Association for final judging.

This year's winners are:

• Seventh- and eighth-grade division: first place, Lauren Byrne of St. Laurence Catholic School in Elgin, second place, Allison Hill of St. Laurence Catholic School, and third place, Arman Pabani (Elgin Academy).

• Fifth- and sixth-grade division: first place, Robert Boydstan of St. Laurence Catholic School, second place, Haddy Buttrum of St. Laurence Catholic School, and third place, Evan Bulatek of Da Vinci Academy in Elgin.
