Side Street Studio Arts celebrates artist-members with week of visual, performing art

Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court in downtown Elgin, will spend Dec. 16-21 celebrating its artist-members.

The week will feature live theater and dance performances by Valerie Meachum and Liliana Reyes and a visual art exhibition featuring the work of Jane Erlandson, Doug Hanson, Jim Lloyd, and Side Street's assistant director Roberto Martinez all in Next Door Theater, 15½ Ziegler Court in Elgin.

Side Street Studio Arts started its membership program in December 2013. With a variety of levels to choose from, members receive art, event, and program discounts, as well as discounts from partnering downtown Elgin businesses, including Chooch's, Danny's Pizza, Martini Room, Rediscover Records, and Simple Balance.

Memberships range from $25 for a student membership to $250 for a business membership. The $35 artist membership also allows for discounted space rentals and a slot in the members-only exhibition.

Also, during Artist-Member Week, memberships can be purchased or renewed and will be accompanied by a free gift from Side Street Studio Arts.

• The Artist-Member Visual Art exhibition in Next Door Theater will feature the work of Jane Erlandson, Doug Hanson, Jim Lloyd, Roberto Martinez with gallery hours on Wednesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free open house artist reception will be Friday, Dec. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Next Door Theater. • On Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m. don't miss "Unvarnished - Staged Reading." The first public presentation of "Unvarnished: A Portrait of Elizabeth Siddal" will be a staged reading in the intimate Next Door Theater. Join them for this solo-theater exploration of the life and work of a Pre-Raphaelite icon. Presented by Valerie Meachum. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door or free for artist-members.

• See Urban Dance Concept's December Showcase at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21. Led by artist-member Liliana Reyes come see what Urban Dance Concept has been up to this past semester. They also will have special guests show their talents. It's a show you don't want to miss at Next Door Theater. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door or free for artist-members.

Side Street Studio Arts was founded in 2013 by Tanner Melvin and Erin Rehberg as an outlet for the artists of Elgin. Currently under the direction of Amanda Harris, Melvin, and Rehberg, its mission is to provide an accessible space, run by artists, encouraging all aspects of the artistic process from creation to curation.
