NWSRA Celebrates 40 Years
On Friday, September 5, over 200 individuals with disabilities, staff and volunteers celebrated Northwest Special Recreation Association's 40th Anniversary Celebration. The event was held at the Schaumburg Park District Sports Center and included a DJ, photo booth, dinner, games and prizes. Volunteers from the Palatine Women's Club, Schaumburg Firefighters Association and Zurich NA were on hand to provide dinner and games for the attendees. The event was held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. that evening, and featured music from NWSRA participant and DJ Eric Brandt. The event featured an online timeline of events throughout the 40 year history of NWSRA, including its awards, accomplishments of highlights of programs.
NWSRA has grown tremendously over its history. NWSRA provides over 2,000 recreational programs and received more than 16,000 registrations annually. In 2013, NWSRA received the National Recreation and Park Association Excellence in Inclusion Award, given to one organization throughout the nation that has proven its leadership in the promotion of inclusion and diversity initiatives.
For over 40 years, NWSRA has provided outstanding opportunities through recreation for children and adults with disabilities. NWSRA serves 17 northwest suburban communities, providing day camps, weekly programs, trips, special events, cultural arts and more.
