Administer Justice offers free legal advice to homeowners facing foreclosure

Administer Justice, a local nonprofit legal aid organization, is offering free foreclosure workshops to assist those in any stage of the foreclosure process.

The workshops will be held on the second and fourth Monday of each month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The next workshop, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8, will be held at the organization's main office, 1750 Grandstand Place, Suite 15, Elgin.

The workshop, presented in both English and Spanish, is conducted by senior staff attorney Pamela Tan. It covers the steps individuals need to take if they are heading into foreclosure or have already been served a foreclosure notice. Information regarding the recently established Kane County Mediation Program will also be provided.

Those who income-qualify will have the opportunity to meet with an attorney one on one at no cost immediately following the workshop. HUD certified housing counselors from Neighborhood Housing Services of the Fox Valley will also be available following the presentation. The workshop is free but space is limited. Those attending should plan to arrive early to ensure a seat.

Although nationally foreclosure rates have declined, according to RealtyTrac, as of July, Illinois still ranks fourth in the nation in terms of number of homes in foreclosure.

The northern Illinois counties of Will, McHenry, Kane, Kendall and Winnebago reflect the highest foreclosure rates throughout the state.
