Hersey High School hosts Rolling Green Invitational

On Monday, Aug. 18, Rolling Green Country Club, Arlington Heights, was home to the 21st annual Rolling Green Invitational.

The tournament, sponsored by John Hersey High School, includes 12 local high schools, each represented by six golfers. The best four individual scores on each team make up the final score. The Rolling Green Invitational is the first tournament of the year for students.

The Rolling Green Invitational was created in 1993, by Rolling Green Member, and retired Hersey High School math teacher, Al Kintzle. Kintzle created the Invitational as a way to let outstanding high school golfers play in a local tournament at a high-caliber golf course.

"A very small percentage of the local high school kids have memberships to private clubs, so the opportunity to play here is a special outing for them," Kintzle said. "These are good kids too. They are well-mannered, well-dressed and very sharp looking."

The participants are so respectful of the course in fact, that this tournament has become one of the favorites of Gary Schweber, Rolling Greens's golf course superintendent.

"If you want to restore your faith in high school students, come see them play," Kintzle added.

Over the course of the years, many participants of the Invitational have risen through the amateur ranks. The tournament has been well received among the community and has never ceased to impress spectators. In years past, the tournament has seen several hole-in-ones, a three-peat winner, and even a score of 67 (5 below par).

This year, Glenbrook South High School brought home the victory with a Team Score of 297. Loyola High School finished in second place with a score of 301. And Glenbrook North came in third with a score of 309.

Also, two of the tournament participants have personal ties to Rolling Green's membership: Nick Rossini of Loyola High School, who placed third overall with a 73, and Robert Garmoe of Prospect High School, with a 83.

Congratulations to all participants of the 21st Rolling Green Invitational.
