Call for Distinguished Alumni nominations

Harper College is accepting nominations for its 2014 Distinguished Alumni Awards, an annual honor saluting former students for outstanding career and community achievements. The nomination deadline is Thursday, May 15. Recipients will be recognized at a fall reception; they must agree to also return to campus at least once more within the year to be a guest speaker or participate in an activity designed to engage students.

"Recipients of this award have the opportunity to inspire others, including the faculty who taught them and the students currently attending classes on the same campus that helped so many alumni get their start," said Fredia Martin, director of alumni relations and special events.

The awards were first handed out in 2008 as part of the College's 40th anniversary celebration. Since then, 35 recipients representing a variety of educational journeys and professional paths have been honored. Honorees have included a mayor, a fire chief, a National Geographic-honored geoarchaeologist, a former NFL player, an Emmy-nominated screenwriter, entrepreneurs and accomplished health care workers.

Nominees must have completed at least two credit courses at Harper, achieved success in their field, and had a positive impact on the community through leadership or volunteering. "It's important that we honor those who have used Harper as a springboard for outstanding accomplishments," Martin said.
