We the People, Not We the Corporations: Move to Amend Forum at DuPage UU Church, March 24

The controversial Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission case has spawned a massive grassroots movement, Move to Amend, www.MoveToAmend.org, calling for an end to corporate personhood.

Steve Alesch, executive director of Illinois Move to Amend, www.IllinoisMoveToAmend.org, will discuss the coalition's work at the local, state and national levels and highlight opportunities to get involved in a forum at DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church (DuPage UU Church), 1828 Old Naperville Road, Naperville, Sunday, March 24, 9:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

In effect, Citizens United and subsequent federal court rulings give free rein to Super PACs and undermine the system of free and fair elections by allowing corporations, special interest groups and wealthy individuals to secretly spend as much as they want to influence elections from domestic and foreign sources, according to Alesch.

Move to Amend supports an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would clearly state that the rights of persons protected by the Constitution are the rights of natural persons and not those of corporations or other artificial entities and that money is not speech within the meaning of the First Amendment.

In the November election, 150 cities across the United States voted on ballot questions asking voters if they supported a constitutional amendment calling for an end to corporate personhood and money as free speech. In every town, the vote was supportive, often by an overwhelming margin. Voters in all 10 of the voting districts in Illinois that had ballot questions voted YES by an average of 73%. Districts included Lisle Township, Warrenville, Kane County, the city of Chicago and Oak Park Township.

DuPage UU Church is a growing congregation of more than 300 members who honor many belief systems and are united by shared values of justice, freedom of thought, and peace between all. For more information, please visit www.DuPageUUChurch.org or contact the church office at 630/505-9408.
