Jackson Buckley gave the Dundee-Crown boys basketball team momentum heading into halftime Friday night with a half-court buzzer beater.

The energized Chargers rode that momentum and dominated the second half, outscoring Hampshire by 21, to beat the Whip-Purs 61-35 in the second place Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Carpentersville.

"We definitely wanted to set the tempo in the second half," said D-C senior Dylan Kissack, who scored 7 points in the third quarter when the Chargers took control. "We kind of took it to them in the second half. We worked really well together in the second half, offensively and defensively."

The game was close throughout the first half as neither team led by more than five. It was tied at 25-25 before a pair of free throws by Brandon Rodriguez with 20.5 seconds remaining in the first half gave D-C a 27-25 lead. After a miss from Hampshire (22-5), Kissack grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to Buckley, who fired a shot from midcourt. The long 3-pointer gave D-C (19-7) a 30-25 lead at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Chargers. A Trent Muscat basket started a 14-0 run over a 3½-minute span to increase a 3-point lead into a 17-point advantage, 46-29.

"Offensively in the first half, I thought we settled for jump shots," D-C coach Lance Huber said. "In the second half, we did a better job on the glass. We did a better job of getting shots in transition and in the paint. So we got some easy buckets."

The Whip-Purs shot 3-for-12 and had 5 turnovers in the third quarter. They scored only 10 points in the second half.

"We don't want to erase it (from our minds) because it is a good test for us, playing a good 4A school right before regionals in a hostile environment," Hampshire senior Tyler Crater said. "That's what we're going to see Tuesday (at the Class 3A Burlington Central regional)."

Crater led the Whip-Purs with 12 points. Shane Hernandez added 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Rodriguez had 12 points for D-C. JT Beasley added 11 points.
