The Jazz Consortium Big Band will be bringing its 17-piece Big Band sound to a new venue, the Congregational Church of Algonquin, 109 Washington St., Algonquin, IL, on Sunday, Nov. 11, 3:00-4:15 p.m. Phone 847.658.5308, website www.algonquinucc.org. Big Band hits old and new will be featured at this public concert, with a freewill offering as a cover charge.
"Since the Bears are playing a night game on Nov.11, the band has been preempted from our regular second Sunday of the month slot at Durty Nellie's Pub in Palatine," explained Jazz Consortium bandleader/saxophonist Roy Vombrack. "We were able to schedule this concert in its place."
Vombrack continued, "This will not be a church service, but a concert open to the public that will feature famous tunes like 'In the Mood' and 'Sing, Sing, Sing' along with extended pieces like 'MacArthur Park' and original compositions by band members. This is the first in what the church may decide will be a series of monthly concerts of various music and events."
The Jazz Consortium first came together in the mid-1970's, consisting of former and current University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University musicians with a love of Big Band music. The group went on to perform at jazz clubs, nightspots and concerts throughout Chicagoland, including an appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival.
The Jazz Consortium disbanded in the early 1980's, with most of the members going on to full-time music careers. The band reunited two years ago, and has since been performing second Sundays monthly at Durty Nellie's in Palatine, as well as playing various concerts and clubs in the area.
