Northwest suburbs mark National Night Out

Tuesday is National Night Out, the original Take Back the Night event that has changed over the years for many communities to be an outdoor festivals that encourage residents and their local police to mingle. All events listed here are on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Arlington Heights: 5:30-8:30 p.m. at North School Park, 410 N. Arlington Heights Road. Displays and demonstrations by Arlington Heights police and fire; Arlington Heights Park District; Cook County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad; U.S. Army; O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission; Illinois State Police; Arlington Heights Engineering Department; Illinois Masons; Red Cross. (847) 368-5330; (847) 506-7872.Barrington: 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Citizens Park, 511 Lake Zurich Road at Route 14. Food, music and games. Barrington High School wrestling team will sponsor a Baggo Tournament; proceeds will be split between National Night Out and the Mat Club. Bartlett: Village wraps up three days of NNO events with a bike ride and a picnic, from 4-9 p.m. From 4-4:30 p.m., ride with Village President Michael Kelly from the Jim Jensen Pavilion to Bartlett Park, Oak and North avenues, for picnic, which is 5-9 p.m. Hot dogs, giveaways, business displays, watermelon-eating contest, McGruff the Crime Dog, mascots of the Bulls, Wolves and Chicago Fire Mascots, the Division Bicycle Stunt Team, Hyperdogs and the Jesse White Tumblers. Community awards #8212; the Business Star Award, Citizen Star Awards and the block party/lighting competition winners #8212; is at the end of the evening.Buffalo Grove: 5-8:30 p.m. at Willow Park South on Old Checker Road. Games, hot dogs, chips and drinks. Meet the Buffalo Grove police and fire departments; help restock the shelves at local food pantries of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council.Des Plaines #1: Des Plaines Police Department holds an open house, 5:30-9 p.m. at the police station, 1418 Miner St. Police vehicles, presentations and tours of the police station. Educational/safety materials will be available. Food from the Choo Choo and Roselli#146;s Pizza. Cook County Bomb Unit; Hostage, Barricade and Terrorism team; Community Relations; Gang Unit; K-9 and helicopter units will be there. The Cook County Sheriff#146;s Financial Crimes Unit will discuss financial safety and senior financial crimes. Safety Town, an interactive and educational program on traffic safety for kids ages 5-8, will be there.
