Glenbard making changes in school lunches

School lunches at the four high schools in Glenbard District 87 will cost more, but they’ll also be healthier, officials said Tuesday.

The price of a combo meal — an entree, two sides and milk — will rise 10 cents to $2.50. The increase was approved by the school board this week through the extension of an existing contract with Sodexo America, the district’s food service provider since 2009.

It’s the first price increase in seven years and it will allow the district to operate the program at a near break-even level, said Chris McClain, the district’s assistant superintendent for business services.

The $1.7 million contract is a 1.3 percent increase over last year.

But with the contract renewal comes assurances from Sodexo and district officials that the food served will be more nutritious.

Glenbard cafeterias already have begun carrying baked chips, whole wheat bread and wraps for deli sandwiches, and pizza made with whole wheat crust. And only low-fat or skim milk is provided.

Starting this fall, french fries will only be available a la carte — and not as a side dish option for combo meals. Currently, fries are only offered three times a week.

In addition, more fruits and vegetables will be available, along with skim chocolate milk.

“Sodexo, with our request and approval, has implemented different changes that might seem small, but they do add up,” McClain said. “We’re trying to encourage healthier eating habits for students. It may not be the most popular thing for students, but we think we have to take an active role in making sure our students are healthy.”

A district wellness committee is also in place to discuss nutrition, physical activity and emotional wellness for students, staff and their families.
