Geist will try assistant AD position at Grant

Ryan Geist has grabbed his share of success on the wrestling mat.

Now he'll try to make a successful transition to a new role, while possibly continuing in his current position as Grant's wrestling coach.

Grant announced last week that Geist has been named the Fox Lake's school assistant athletic director, effective July 1. He replaces Tom Duffy, who recently was named as retiring AD Mark Barczak's replacement.

Geist has coached Grant's wrestling team to the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division championship every season since the NSC split into two divisions 10 years ago.

He said he plans to coach the Bulldogs again in the 2011-12 season, but after that he is uncertain what his future holds with the wrestling program.

“I think I'll be able to do both, but I'm not committed to it, though,” Geist said.

Geist attended Grant as a freshman before transferring to Grayslake, where he graduated from in 1990. A history and economics teacher, he is in the his 14th year at Grant and 12th as wrestling coach.

He said he will give up his responsibilities as freshman-sophomore golf coach.

“Wrestling is my passion,” Geist said. “But as far as being involved in the other sports (as assistant AD), I'm looking forward to that, as well.”

Grant's 10-year championship run in the NSC Prairie is in jeopardy this season after the Bulldogs lost to Wauconda last Friday. Wauconda improved to 4-0 in the division, while Grant fell to 3-1.
