Friday's Fox Valley roundup

Burlington Central girls basketball coach Stephanie Smith was hoping her team would bounce back from last Saturday's tough loss to Hampshire with a strong effort Friday night at home against Richmond-Burton.

Is a 19-0 first quarter strong enough coach?

That's the lead the host Rockets jumped out to against Richmond, which beat BC by 1 point earlier in the season. BC (13-7, 3-2) extended the advantage to 38-5 by halftime and then cruised to a 54-35 Big Northern East win.

"We shot very well in the first half tonight," said Smith. "The ball definitely rolled our way and our defense created our offense.

"I wanted to see how the girls were going to react after the Hampshire game and they came out and stepped it up. I'm very proud of them."

Sophomore Brenda Thasavong led Central with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jordan Maisto had 16 points and 6 assists, while Alli Settanni added 9 points and 9 rebounds and Taylor Colby 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Bartlett 77, Neuqua Valley 69: Jacki Gulzynski had 18 points and 9 rebounds and Haley Videckis scored 16 points as Bartlett (13-8, 5-2) scored an Upstate Eight win in Naperville. Nicole Beck and Kristin Conniff added 7 points each for the Hawks, while Janessa Baker (5 assists) and Christina Carlson (9 rebounds) each had 6 points. Bartlett had to withstand a furious Neuqua rally to earn the win. The Hawks led 51-26 at halftime and 65-41 entering the fourth quarter before the Wildcats outscored them 28-12 in the final period.

East Aurora 74, South Elgin 67: The Storm (8-12, 2-5) had plenty of offense but little defense in this Upstate Eight loss in Aurora. Becca Smith scored a game-high 27 points to lead South Elgin. Alyssa Krause added 15 for the Storm, who host Hampshire in a nonconference game at noon today.
