Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale 2023-24 season to feature new collaborations

Thrilling music, fresh sounds, and delightful collaborations are in the works for Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale's 2023-24 season.

They are joining forces with Anima-Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus for "Wintersong 2023," performing selected movements from Karl Jenkins' "Stella Natalis."

The Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale and Anima are both committed to contributing to the rich musical culture here in the western suburbs.

Jennifer Whiting, Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale director, writes, "Evan Bruno (director of Anima) and I are excited to collaborate, and 'Stella Natalis' is an ideal vehicle for this dynamic project."

Composer Karl Jenkins, known for his "global crossover" style, mixes classical with ethnic percussion. He writes, "Stella Natalis means 'star of birth,' and the music conveys the Christmas message of peace, goodwill, compassion, and a new beginning, whilst using a wider palette of inspiration."

The program is rounded out with holiday selections audiences love to hear and singers love to sing.

The Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale's spring 2024 concert will present Adolphus Hailstork's "Shout for Joy" with pipe organ, timpani, and brass ensemble. This mighty, 14-minute work anchors a joyful and inspiring program packed with spirituals.

Their recent concert "Dream of Flight" was recorded live and CDs are available at gewchorale.org/shop/. Listeners may also tune in to Northern Public Radio's "Encore!" with host Eric Hradecky, presenting live performances from regional classical musicians. Tune in to WNIJ/WNIU (90.5 FM) or the livestream at northernpublicradio.org to hear "Dream of Flight" on Monday, June 26, at 7 p.m.

Singers interested in joining the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale are invited to request an audition. All voice parts are welcome to apply, but they are especially seeking alto 2's, tenors, and basses for the upcoming season. Auditions include singing a familiar song, vocal exercises, sight reading, and independent part singing. A prepared piece is welcome but not required.
