Harper to hold free outdoor Summer Concert Series

Harper College will host its annual Summer Concert Series June 8 through July 27.

All concerts are free and open to the public. Shows will be held at the Drs. Kenneth and Catherine Ender Outdoor Pavilion, on the north side of Harper's campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine. Visitors can park for free in lots 9 and 10. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

No seating will be provided; concertgoers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be moved to the J143 Theater.

• June 8: Peter Aglinskas, solo guitar. Award-winning guitarist and Harper Music Department faculty member Peter Aglinskas returns to the pavilion stage for a concert of his solo fingerstyle arrangements of Latin, jazz, soul, and classic rock gems.

• June 15: Pan Go Steel. An evening of musical compositions and arrangements for steelpan ensemble.

• June 22: Cruising Across the Time Zones. Violinist Linda Veleckis joins guitarist and Harper Music Department faculty member Peter Aglinskas for a concert of music from around the world featuring Afro-Cuban, Argentine, Brazilian, Baltic, Eastern European, and African-American styles.

• June 29: Harper Radio Presents. OK Cool and Pinksqueeze have emerged as two of the top bands in the Chicago independent music scene. Now, backed by their latest releases, fawn and Be Gay, Have Fun, OK Cool and Pinksqueeze are on the precipice of breaking through nationally.

• July 6: Jazz Faculty. Harper College Jazz Faculty will perform Jazz classics, modern favorites and original compositions. All selections have been arranged or composed by the faculty.

• July 13: The Continental String Ensemble and The String Shredders. Harper College's's violin/viola instructor Edgar Gabriel presents a doubleheader of his two ensembles. The first half is the Continental String Ensemble presenting material from their new 1893 album, Music from the Era of the Chicago World's Fair, with harpist Tija Danilovics, guitarist Steven Vazquez, Hannah Barton and Edgar on violins and viola. The second half is the pop/rock trio the String Shredders, with vocalist Arla Vox, guitarist Ron Steta and Edgar on electric violin.

• July 20: Harper Guitar Legacy Concert. Harper Guitar Legacy presents an evening of music by American composers. Hear members of the Harper Guitar Legacy and guests perform works by Joplin, Bernstein, York, Morse and more. Hear different combinations of guitars from solo, duo, trio, quartets and full ensemble in this presentation of the American musical landscape.

• July 27: Lab Band. The Harper College Lab band will perform classic and modern songs from the Jazz, Funk/Fusion and New Orleans-inspired repertoire. Students will be featured as soloists and arrangers. Selections can range from artist Charlie Parker to Miles Davis to P-Funk.
