Round Lake Teacher Publishes Guided Journal to help others preserve their legacy

Kera Sanchez(35), is a high school Spanish teacher at Round Lake High School. For the past 12 years, Kera has enjoyed creating engaging and thought-provoking lessons for her students, but this year, her classroom has expanded.

In June of 2022, Kera found herself in a heartbreaking situation, just days after her mom had attended the birth of her second-born daughter, her mother, Laura Jacobson, unexpectedly passed away on vacation in Italy with friends.

Laura was a beloved Family and consumer science teacher at Cary Grove High School, and hundreds showed up for the public celebration of life at the school's auditorium, with an outcry of support and love for "J", leaving behind hundreds of letters for Kera to sort through.

Fast-forward to February 2023, and an idea came to Kera. She loved reading the letters her students had left her, but she wished there was something more from her mom to hold on to during times of need, and when she missed her mother the most. She used that grief and void as a springboard to create something to help others in a similar situation.

Legacy Letters, a guided journal, covers many topics one would want to leave behind for the next generation. The journal prompts users to reflect on their life experiences, values, and beliefs, and to record these thoughts and memories in writing.

Legacy Letters, designed to be a lasting record of the user's life, will provide insight into their unique personality and perspective.

The guided journal also includes a section where the user can write messages to their loved ones to cherish during milestone moments, in the chance they cannot be there.

Through her experience as a teacher, penning this guided journal came quite naturally to her, and the passion project was completed in under 3 months. This April her vision comes to fruition. Hard and soft cover journals will be available on Amazon. She plans on releasing a Spanish version this fall.
