Schaumburg Library announces selection for fifth year of its One Book, One Community

For the fifth year, Schaumburg Township District Library is hosting a communitywide reading initiative. This year, the library invites everyone to read "This Tender Land" by William Kent Krueger and join in conversation about the book and its themes of family, home, identity and belief. This year's One Book, One Community runs from Dec. 1 through Feb. 16.

Schaumburg Library's One Book, One Community is a time for residents of Schaumburg Township and the surrounding area to join together in the joy of reading a great book, and have meaningful conversations. The library's One Book, One Community selection this year is The New York Times bestselling historical fiction novel "This Tender Land" by William Kent Krueger.

The library also selects titles for young readers that focus on similar themes, making it easy for the whole family to participate and join in conversation together. This year's titles for young readers are:

• "When We Were Alone" by David A. Robertson - a picture book recommended for ages 5-8

"I Can Make This Promise" by Christine Day - a chapter book recommended for ages 9-12.

• "Elatsoe" by Darcie Little Badger - a novel recommended for ages 12-19

Schaumburg Library has also planned more than 20 book discussions and related programs, including a Community Tiny Art Show, so everyone can participate in the way they are most comfortable.

Because "This Tender Land" is set in 1932, from Dec. 12-Feb. 16, Schaumburg Library's Central Library, located at 130 S. Roselle Road, in Schaumburg, will host "Dorothea Lange's America" a focused exhibition of 30 original, exquisite lifetime prints by the legendary documentary photographer Dorothea Lange. Lange's empathetic images of migrant workers, suffering families and tortured landscapes seared the faces of the Great Depression into America's consciousness.

Schaumburg Library's One Book, One Community culminates with a visit from author William Kent Krueger on Thursday, Feb. 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, in Schaumburg.
