Prescribed Burns Completed by Northbrook Park District

Since February, teams have been executing prescribed burns throughout Northbrook in an effort to preserve ecosystems and maintain a healthy native plant environment. On April 11, Northbrook Park District finished out the last prescribed burn on park district land in partnership with Pizzo and Associates.

The Village of Northbrook and Northbrook Park District practice ecological prescribed burns as a natural maintenance system. Burning only a section of prairie or natural area each year allows refuge for wildlife habitat and is a major tool for preserving biological diversity. Planned burns can decrease competition from weeds, reduce the buildup of vegetative fuel, increase plant vigor and support a balance of minerals within the soil. This project was partially funded by the ComEd Green Region Grant in conjunction with prescribed burns with the Village.

According to Bill Meyer, Parks Division Manager for the Northbrook Park District, "This is a very important part of our management practices to maintain native plants in our parks and golf courses."

Over the last few months, burns have been successfully completed in vegetative areas at Anetsberger Golf Course, Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Techny Prairie Park and Fields and Wood Oaks Green Park. District staff planned each burn with input from Pizzo & Associates, who then performed the burns.
