Indian American students in Aurora-Naperville celebrate Teachers Appreciation Week

The U.S. celebrates the first week of May as "Teachers Appreciation Week" and Tuesday of the same week as "National Teachers Day".

On Sunday, May 1, Indian American students and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers celebrated this occasion by hosting and facilitating teachers across Aurora-Naperville as part of the "Guru Vandana" event.

Hindu culture considers the Guru as the "Supreme Being" who invokes and sustains the light of knowledge while eliminating the darkness of ignorance. Our lives are touched and inspired by countless teachers in schools, colleges and many other activities that we participate and excel in. To acknowledge and appreciate these Gurus who silently shape our lives, HSS volunteers across the nation celebrate this occasion as Guru Vandana.

In this cultural event, the children explained the significance of Guru and ancient Sanskrit verses "Mantras" which compared the Guru to God, and pointing out the Guru's role in achieving the supreme knowledge were recited. Students read out personal messages thanking their teachers and as many as 45 teachers and Indian Prairie Unit District 204 board member Natasha Grover and board president Laurie Donahue were honored at this event.
