DAR Announces Recipient of Outstanding Cadet Medal

Barrington, IL-based Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) announces the recipient of its DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal. Chapter members first learned of the Lincoln Chapter of U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps when they volunteered last December at Wreaths Across America (WAA) Day. At this event volunteers place wreaths on the graves of veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. USNSCC is an organization for young Americans, aged 10 to 18, sponsored by the Navy League, a nonprofit civilian organization. One of its missions is to introduce America's youth to the Navy.

In seeking a way to recognize their contribution, the Chapter's WAA Chair Deb Edlund worked with the local Division Commander to discuss and identify a qualified recipient for the DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal. This medal recognizes academic excellence, dependability, good character, leadership and adherence to military discipline.

At the Chapter's April meeting, Signal Hill Chapter Regent Joyce Wright proudly awarded the DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal to U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Petty Officer Drake Rueckemann, a senior at McHenry High School. Rueckemann has also been awarded the NSCC Community Service, Academic Achievement and Color Guard ribbons. He played varsity football, currently takes part in an internship program with the McHenry Police Department and will begin his U.S. Naval training in July following high school graduation.

The Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded in Barrington, IL in 1972. NSDAR is a volunteer women's service organization headquartered in Washington, DC.

Due to fundraising efforts throughout the year, the Chapter contributes financially to several 501 (c) (3) organizations whose missions support that of NSDAR: historic preservation, education, patriotism, conservation, and Native Americans.

NSDAR provides more than $1.5 million in scholarships annually. It is the largest group of participants in support of Wreaths Across America. Through its various programs and initiatives, NSDAR strives to increase the awareness of men and women who achieved American independence, including those of diverse backgrounds.
