NSYMCA Collecting Essential Pet Supplies for Local Shelters

The North Suburban YMCA's Social Responsibility Committee is collecting essential pet supplies during January and February.

The supplies will be donated to three local animal shelters including Wright-Way Rescue, Morton Grove; Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, Deerfield; and Heartland Animal Shelter, Wheeling. Items may be dropped off at the Y's front desk at 2705 Techny Road, in Northbrook.

In addition, volunteers of all ages are invited to the North Suburban YMCA from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, to help create fleece pet blankets to donate to the shelters. The construction of the blankets require simple cutting and tying, with no sewing required. Space is limited and participants are asked to bring their own scissors and one yard of fleece.

"The community is encouraged to bring their pet item donations anytime between now and Feb. 27, the day of the pet blanket making event," said Karen Brownlee, chairwoman of the North Suburban YMCA's Social Responsibility Committee. "One of the easiest ways to teach our children about kindness and empathy is to treat animals well. The pet blanket making event helps to nurture compassion toward animals while providing opportunities for family fun and togetherness."

Recommended donated pet items include: One yard pieces of fleece material; paper towels; bleach; cat litter; laundry detergent; mops, brooms, and buckets; trash and contractor bags; unopened pet food; office supplies (paper reams, pens, highlighters, etc.); dog and cat toys; Kongs and puzzle feeder toys; leashes, collars and harnesses; and Royal Canin BabyCat Kitten Food.

Social Responsibility is a core belief of the North Suburban YMCA. The Y's Social Responsibility Committee recently hosted a successful Blessing Bag Packing Day in December. Many of the volunteers were intergenerational families who came together to help local community members experiencing homelessness.
