Elmhurst Children's Theatre kicked off season with 'Unintentionally Hilarious'

Laughter and applause filled the performance space at the Brauer House in Lombard on Tuesday evening, Oct. 12, as a cast of 16 middle school students performed hilarious, original sketch comedy routines for an audience of family, friends, and other comedy-loving supporters.

"Unintentionally Hilarious" is in its 14th season as an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe developed by Elmhurst Children's Theatre.

Under the direction of Tim Soszko, the students wrote and performed the 23 routines.

Sketch plots addressed topics as varied as birds angry at commercial airliners, children misbehaving at funerals, slumber parties, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.

"I appreciated that sketch comedy gave me the ability to create and incorporate my own comedic ideas," said Ava Turek, a sixth-grader at Sandburg Middle School.

In addition to directing the "Unintentionally Hilarious" productions for the past 14 years, Soszko teaches at The Actors Training Center, The Revival, Booth, and Quinlan, among others. He also performs in musical improv group The Deltones.

The next production will be "The Music Man" on Jan. 21-23 at Timothy Christian School in Elmhurst.
