Northfield Township Road District Celebrates Street and Sewer Safety Improvements Near Henking School

After months of planning, the Northfield Township Road District recently completed a new public safety construction project located in Glenview on Linneman Street and Huber Lane near Henking Elementary School. To celebrate the project's completion, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Monday, October 18 with several school officials, local dignitaries, and neighbors on hand.

The initiative was designed to make the streets around Henking School and Crowley Park in Glenview safer for the students and families who walk to school on a daily basis. The new construction includes a widened and updated sidewalk complete with ADA tactile warning tiles, and a new drainage system, solving the critical flooding problem on Linneman Street.

The sidewalk's ADA warning strips feature surfaces that can be felt through the soles of most types of shoes, making crossing the street more accessible for those with disabilities. The three new drainage interceptors, new sod, and drainage stones were added to give much needed water flow relief to the homeowners and cars on Linneman Street. Until now, slow drainage would cause flooding near the school's drop off areas.

"Children attending Henking School and people with disabilities can now safely cross the street, and the new drainage system keeps the dangerous rain overflow from sitting on Linneman Street," stated Tim Rueckert, Highway Commissioner for the Northfield Township Road District. "We're particularly grateful to Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton who assisted in the funding portion for the project. With Scott's help, the Road District was awarded a $50,000 grant."

The total cost of the project was approximately $180,000 which included the new ADA compliant sidewalks, installation of safety islands, relocation of stop signs, and the installation of the drainage system.
