The Front Yard Is The New Parlor

Curb appeal and first impressions are great reasons to landscape the front yard, but now there's another incentive to personalize the space. Neighborly conversations over the picket fence are back in style - with a twist.

"Front yards have become the new social parlor, functioning as an extension of the living room where style, comfort and design are trending," says Sue Ryba, horticulturist and outdoor living expert with Bertog Landscape Co., Wheeling, Ill.

An outcome of social distancing, studies show homeowners in 2020 and 2021 are upgrading their outdoor living spaces in record numbers - and this includes the front yard. Designing a place for respite and conversation at the front of the home is a creative way to comfortably welcome neighbors and friends.

"Start by taking a look at what you already have," Ryba says. "Maybe add a porch or pergola or a larger entryway near your front door. Make the most of it by stylizing the area with seasonal containers overflowing with annuals and perennials and add seating with pillows."

Then, she says, envision what you'd like to have.

Front-yard respites range from stone patios with fire pits and colorful or subtle Adirondack chairs to small outdoor rooms with rocking chairs and water features bounded by flowering shrubs like hydrangea, weigela or ninebark, and even taller ornamental grasses.

"Consider also how the outdoor living space will extend the features and aesthetics inside your home," Ryba says. "New products in outdoor furniture, fire and water features, textiles, heating and lighting make it fun to design and stylize a comfortable and inviting space."
