Des Plaines riverbank cleanup a big success

Volunteers cleaned five locations along the Des Plaines River Area on a recent Saturday morning.

The annual event, hosted by Izaak Walton League of Des Plaines and Clean Up - Give Back, drew about 100 volunteers who cleaned from Campground Woods in Des Plaines down to Chippewa Woods in Rosemont.

Approximately 1,800 pounds of trash and debris were removed from the environment.

"The amount of garbage is down from 2,300 pounds last year as our volunteers are making a real difference," said Donna Adam, president of Clean Up - Give Back. "We are finding some areas are staying cleaner along the river. Also, since there has not been flooding this year, there is less trash coming from upstream."

Clean Up - Give Back conducted 62 cleanups during 2020. They also operate a Flexible Service Program for individuals to earn service hours for school, work or court.
