Jesse Brown VA Medical Center welcomes new associate medical center director

Jesse Brown VA Medical Center welcomes Matthew Orenstein as the new associate medical center director.

In this position, Orenstein is responsible for several administrative operations and services of the health care system, such as patient administration, emergency management, biomedical and facilities engineering, supply chain management, human resources, fiscal, acquisitions, information systems security, decision support systems, vehicular fleet, veterans transportation and beneficiary travel, VERA, and privacy programs.

"We are very excited to have Matt at Jesse Brown," said Rick Ament, medical center director. "His leadership experience in the Veterans Health Administration and the private sector, along with his many years in the military, will make us better and stronger as we serve the needs of veterans throughout the Chicago area."

Before coming to Jesse Brown, Orenstein served as the interim associate director for operations, and chief of facilities and engineering service for the VA Maryland Health Care System.

Before joining the VAMHCS, he served as the chief of engineering for West Texas VA Health Care System and Acquisitions Program Manager for the VA North Texas Health Care System. Before joining the VA, Orenstein spent two years in private industry as a senior program manager with an architectural and engineering services firm, where he led strategy, capture planning, proposal development, and task order management for the firm's federal pursuits in the Central Region of the U.S. Orenstein served on active duty in the Army for more than 21 years. His service included two combat tours in Iraq.

I carry a sense of passion and pride to give back and am devoted to ensuring our nation's Heroes receive the high quality of health care they deserve," Orenstein said.

Orenstein holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Syracuse University, a master's in industrial engineering and a master's in business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a master's in public administration from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He holds licenses as a registered professional engineer and a certified facility manager.

Jesse Brown VA Medical Center is located near downtown Chicago in the Illinois Medical District. It is a 220-bed acute care facility and operates four community-based outpatient clinics in Auburn Gresham, Lakeside, Chicago Heights, and Crown Point, Ind. It provides care to approximately 62,000 enrolled Veterans who reside in the City of Chicago, Cook County and six counties in northwestern Indiana.
