Schaumburg Library to Feature The Long Shadow in Discussion with Documentary Director

"The Long Shadow," a documentary, will be the subject of an online conversation and Q&A with Emmy-Award winning Director Frances Causey from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24, on Zoom. This Schaumburg Township District Library program is free, but requires registration to get the Zoom link. Register at www.SchaumburgLibrary.org.

The library encourages participants to view the documentary prior to the discussion. It is available to stream from Friday, Feb. 19 through Friday, Feb. 26 at thelongshadowfilm.com/libraries. Schaumburg Library cardholders can also check out the DVD or view it on Kanopy, available on the library's website.

In "The Long Shadow," Causey traces her family' legacy of white privilege, placing it in the context of the history of anti-black racism in the United States that began with slavery and continues to impact our society today. Causey and Producer Sally Holst passionately seek the hidden truth and the untold stories of how America - guided by the South's powerful political influence - steadily, deliberately and at times secretly, established white privilege in our institutions, laws, culture and economy. This event is co-sponsored by multiple Illinois libraries.

"Frances Causey's personal journey in exposing her own family's history of slaveholding and how the institution of slavery continues to have an impact today is both brave and incredible," said Yolanda Smith, executive director, NAACP Houston.

A full list of online library programs is available at SchaumburgLibrary.org. All three library buildings are closed until further notice, in accordance with the governor's COVID-19 guidelines.
