'Know Your Rights' Programs Highlight Fair Pay, Safety, Labor Exploitation

A series of "Know Your Rights" programs in November will be offered by the Schaumburg Township District Library and presented by Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services. All three programs are free, but require registration. Register at SchaumburgLibrary.org to receive Zoom links to the programs. Those who prefer may watch the events live-streamed at SchaumburgLibrary.tv.

"Your Right to Fair Pay" will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12. In this session, participants will learn about their rights to fair payment, including information about the minimum wage, tipped wage and overtime. The presenters will also provide useful tools to help determine whether a person is receiving the pay he or she was promised, and for protection against wage theft. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during and after the program.

"Health and Safety at Work During COVID-19" will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16. In this session, the topic will be workers' rights to a healthy and safe workplace, as well as the additional protections employees should be afforded at work due to COVID-19. Presenters will also cover whistleblower protections and legal remedies for those who have concerns about health or safety at work.

"Labor Exploitation and Trafficking" is scheduled from 6:30-7:30, Thursday, Nov. 19. Attendees will learn that labor trafficking exists in the U.S. in a wide variety of industries, often hidden in plain sight. In this session, topics will include legal definitions, indicators and risk factors, and remedies for people who've been in this situation. Participants will also learn how to help alleviate this illegal activity in their own communities.
