Local area veterans in need are receiving $1,000 in Walmart gift cards from the deacons of Church of the Cross, 475 W. Higgins Rd., Hoffman Estates. The gift cards were presented to Joe Palmer, founder of Who We Serve, a group that helps coordinate resources and support for veterans. Twenty $50 gift cards will be distributed through the Jessie Brown VA Medical Facility that serves veterans in Chicago and Cook County. The cards will enable the veterans to buy living essentials and food, according to Palmer. The money for the cards was raised through mission-giving to the church.
