Author Visit and Writing Workshops Coming to Elk Grove Library

Author Susan Miura will present two writing workshops on Wednesday, July 17, at 3:15 p.m. for students and 7 p.m. for adults at the Elk Grove Village Public Library, 1001 Wellington Ave. The workshops are free, but registration is required. To register, call (847) 439-0447 or sign up online at www.egvpl.org. Miura's books will be available for purchase and signing following each session.

Students in grades 6-8 are welcome to attend the afternoon session, which will begin with a 45-minute author visit. Miura will discuss her books and the art of writing, followed by an interactive session in which participants will learn key skills for taking their writing to the next level. Sub sandwiches, prizes and candy will all be included.

"We'll focus on using familiar people, places, and circumstances to create realistic characters, settings and plots," Miura said. "Then we'll work a bit on imagery, which is key to adding depth and color to any piece of writing. And we'll have fun, too, with a few crazy prizes thrown in."

Imagery will also be the focus of the hour-long adult workshop at 7 p.m., as Miura shares techniques for using sensory words, metaphors, similes and more to appeal to the reader's senses. "The Art of Imagery" will include handouts and opportunities to practice the techniques discussed.

Miura is the author of Healer, which won a Readers' Favorite award for young adult fiction and a Royal Dragonfly first place award for fiction. Healer was released by Vinspire Publishing in 2018. Its sequel, Shards of Light, is scheduled for release in late August. Her other works include Pawprints in the Snow, Show Me a Sign, and short stories published in four anthologies.
