Rockford Choral Union to put on Handel's 'Messiah' Nov. 24-25

Rockford Choral Union, now in its 73rd year, is presenting its 192nd and 193rd performances of George Frederic Handel's "Messiah" at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24-25, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 920 Third Ave. in Rockford. This year's concert is in a new location.

The performances feature four internationally known soloists, more than 120 singers representing 55 area churches, and a full Baroque chamber orchestra with pipe organ and harpsichord.

This year, Mike Beert, principal cellist with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and music professor at Rock Valley College, will be taking the baton in his first year as conductor of the Rockford Choral Union.

The Messiah's message remains a living testament to the One who came to bring hope and peace to the world. Every Thanksgiving, Handel's "Messiah" is presented as a gift to the community. The work is one of the most performed of all works in the classical genre.

Choral Union members, all of whom volunteer their time for the seven rehearsals and the two performances, are motivated to present this work because of their love of singing and presenting this story of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
