Arlington Heights Garden Club Awards Scholarships
Each year the Arlington Heights Garden Club awards one or more $1500 academic scholarships to assist local students. The club has awarded 28 scholarships to outstanding students since 2003. Proceeds from the annual Garden Walk are used to fund this program. The Arlington Heights Garden Club is pleased to award scholarships to three outstanding students for the 2018-9 school year.
Ashley Roscoe, a Hersey High School graduate studying Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, was awarded the $1500 Marolyn Bina Memorial Scholarship named in honor of a long time Garden Club member. During Ashley's first year in college, she worked as a research assistant for the Undergraduate Research Department. She also volunteered with the Sustainability Office at the university where she monitored local streams. Her goal is to become a Fish and Wildlife officer.
Matthew Hoffman, a Wheeling High School graduate studying Biological & Agricultural Engineering at Texas A&M was awarded a second $1500 scholarship. Matthew's GPA at college of 3.86/4.0 positions him as an Engineering Honors student. Along with a full college class load, he also is involved in several extra-curricular activities: member of the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Student Association, Howdy Farm Volunteer, and Texas A&M Gymnastics Club.
Club member Marty Landwehr funded the third $1500 scholarship in honor of his late wife Wendy, a previous club member and avid gardener. It differs from the AHGC Scholarship in that students who assist other students or participate in a mentoring program are specifically credited for these efforts.
Alexis Opperman, a Buffalo Grove High School graduate with a 4.3/4.0 GPA, was selected as the first recipient of the Wendy Landwehr Memorial Scholarship. During her high school career, Alexis has assisted others as a Lit Lab tutor and a Lighted School House assistant. She will be studying Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama.
The Arlington Heights Garden Club is open to new members and guests and meets the fourth Monday of the month at the Arlington Heights Village Hall, 33 South Arlington Heights Road.
