Scout Pinewood Derby big event at Woodfield

Over 250 Cub Scouts from the North West suburban area as well as Chicago competed at the All District Pathway to Adventure Council pinewood derby last weekend, April 15, in the Woodfield Grand Court. The pinewood derby was the culmination of competition in design and speed carried out at Cub Scout packs this spring. Garrett Huskie a Bear Cub Scout from Pack 129 of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois was the overall champion pinewood derby speed winner.

The derby was organized by Mike Gutschick of Lake Zurich, is a long term scout volunteer and Silver Beaver recipient. Help for the event came from The Simon Goup who manage Woodfield, Mike Currier track operator, adult volunteers and Boy Scouts from Troops 209 and 188 in Palatine. Mike is looking forward to next year's event when girls, who can join Cub Scouts starting June 11 this year, will be able to compete too. The Pathway to Adventure Council of the Boy Scouts of America serves over 21,000 youth age 7 through 20 years in the greater Chicago area.
