Boys volleyball: Shampine has a day, Glenbrook South wins tourney

Led by senior outside hitter Chance Shampine and junior setter James Ganzorig, Glenbrook South's boys volleyball team won Downers Grove South's Richard Griesheim Invitational to improve to 17-1.

Over April 21-22 the Titans went 5-0 with wins over Plainfield North, Naperville North, Lincoln-Way West, Barrington and, in the title match, Oak Park.

According to Randy Whalen in a story for Illinois Prep Volleyball.com, Shampine had 24 kills in the championship against Oak Park. Glenbrook South won in three sets, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23.

The 24 kills tied Shampine with his older brother, Jack, for third place in Glenbrook South history for most kills in a match.

At game point in the third set against Oak Park, the Titans leading 24-22 with Oak Park serving, Shampine spiked his 24th kill to win the match.

Whalen reported that Glenbrook South junior Jaki Erdene had 5 kills and 2 blocks, and juniors Zach White and Kris Blumberg each added 4 kills.

Glenbrook South tested its 17-1 record - its sole loss April 19 to New Trier at Wheaton Warrenville South's Tiger Classic - in a nonconference game Tuesday against Warren.

The Titans visited Glenbrook North on Wednesday. Both teams were 4-0 in the Central Suburban League South.
