Police conducting Route 59 safety initiative Monday

Law enforcement agencies across the suburbs will take part in a safety initiative Monday along the Route 59 corridor.

Titled "Route 59 on 5/9," the initiative will involve agencies from Lake County to Will County. Each jurisdiction will implement their own enforcement action based on the safety needs of their communities.

The Naperville Police Department's efforts will focus on speed, distracted driving and seat belt violations.

"Our goal is to reduce the number of traffic crashes along Route 59, especially those that result in serious injury or death," said Naperville Sgt. Rick Krakow.

Participating police departments in addition to Naperville include Antioch, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Joliet, Plainfield, Shorewood, Streamwood, Warrenville and West Chicago. Illinois State Police also are expected to join the effort.
