Every week judges at the Daily Herald evaluate images sent to us by readers in the Northwest suburbs, Lake County, DuPage County and the Fox Valley. Finalists are chosen and their photos are published in the Neighbor section.
Once a month, our judges choose their favorite as the top winner in each zone.

I took this photo of tulips at the Chicago Botanic Garden just before sunset. I liked the soft focus effect on the pretty pastels of the gently swaying flowers.

Cubist Portraits. My wife Carol and I are reflected in the mirrored mosaic of the "Firebird" sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle. It stands outside the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC. We visited the city last April.

Nyhaven Canal in Copenhagen, Denmark. I took the picture in April while on vacation. I loved the charming European architecture in Denmark. on the bridge in front of the canal I saw several locks on the bridge railing. Couples write their names or initials on the small padlocks and fasten to the bridge. Then they throw the key in the water, sealing their love forever.

On April 28, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. the Cardinal perched on the clump Little Leaf Linden in our backyard - a great winter picture in late April. An hour later the snow had melted and fallen off. The Cardinal is perfectly posed. I like the splash of red with the white and green background.
