Images: January photo contest winners

A look at the Daily Herald photo contest winners from the month of January.

This is a photo of an anhinga spearing a small fish in Celebration, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018. The bird caught the fish in a canal, walked out onto the bank, and gave us quite a show while trying to swallow it head first. He was so focused on what he was doing, he let us get pretty close and didn't seem to mind our presence. Just a great insight into mother nature. David Jacobson of Mt. Prospect
When I saw what my neighborhood looked like after this snowfall, I had to go to the Morton Arboretum with my camera and tripod. Paul P. Didzerekis of Wheaton
This past November these two Whooping Cranes spent two weeks in a cornfield in Hampshire. I like this photo for two reasons. One is the symmetry of flight, the other is I never thought I would ever have the opportunity to view these birds as there are only approximately 500 in existence. They are native to North America and are found nowhere else in the world. John Prickett of Hampshire
A picture perfect Christmas Eve at the Salt River, Arizona. Mountains, Sky, Water, Reflection. Don Miller of Antioch
"Cloud Maker" When a geyser gets hot enough they shoot water into the sky and steam pours out ... But if you look closely at it - the geyser is really shooting clouds into the sky. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Hillary Scaletta of Hawthorn Woods
A Galapagos Short Eared Owl struggles to alight with it's prey, a baby Nazca Booby bird. This photo was taken on the volcanic island of Genovesa, one of the Galapagos Archepelago during our December 2018 expedition. Rachel Haas of Prospect Heights
Each day at sunset we enjoyed watching the "bubble man" on the wall of the boardwalk on Pacific Beach in San Diego. Our grandkids loved running to pop the bubbles. Sue Tripp of Warrenville
This photo is from the Douro Valley near Porto, Portugal. It was taken last November on a trip to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Portugal had so many wonderful sites, vistas, and people. David Dorgan of Elgin
Alaskan sunrise at 4 a.m., seen from sea in August 2017. Don Miller of Antioch
Fall colors greet two hikers at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle this past October. I liked the way that the bridge leads the viewer into the scene toward the hikers and the warm background colors. Mike Weimer of St. Charles
It's not just any moon. It's a 'Super Blood Wolf Moon' according to my space and galactic-loving son, Max Finder, who was jumping up and down from excitement as he spied this grand spectacle from our living room window. It was quite the sight to see among the colors of the evenings sunset after a cold, brisk January day. The 'red' color comes later in the evening when the earth's shadow is cast over the moon which produces an orange and reddish color. Someday, eight-year-old Max hopes to travel into space and be an astronaut. Marni Finder of Hoffman Estates
Tubing with the dolphins. This picture was taken in Marco Island Florida during the week of Thanksgiving. The dolphins seemed to enjoy jumping in front of the raft, much to the delight of my grandchildren on the raft. Fred Gruber of Streamwood
This boat sailed into the sunset and caught the sinking sun in it's sail! Jeanne Hintz of Elgin
I love this photo of Mundelein middle schoolers at a cross country meet. The sunshine, the moving shoes, the energy, you can just feel the team spirit! Cheryl Keegan of Mundelein
Plainfield in December, 2018. I love golden hour. I love to stay connected to nature and register moments like that. Aline Thurler Rondon Möller of Naperville
