Guidance on Collective PTSD and Moving Forward
Dr. Bonnie Estensen, Psy.D., L.C.P.C mental health counselor and owner of Guided Path Psychological Services in Palatine, Illinois, shares concerns and guidance about collective PTSD during this time period. Dr. Bonnie Estensen has been a therapist, educator and public speaker for over 3 decades, consistently challenging and changing people and policies that are oppressive.
She explains: "Some of you might know what I'm saying, others might decide to ponder the possibility, while there may be some that think it has no merit.
As a psychologist with years of expertise in healing PTSD survivors, I cannot help but diagnose what is happening now in this country as a collective "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)."
What our nation is going through is a stress response similar to PTSD. This "disorder" impacts all areas of functioning and is the result of trauma. In our nation, we have never been witness to such an enormous amount of atrocities occurring on such a global scale. This impacts trauma responses both individually and collectively.
So here it goes and for what it's worth...First line of treatment is to help the client feel safe in the here and now with various grounding techniques.
Consider going within yourself to ensure you are grounded, clear headed, connected in healthy ways, and in line with your authentic self... you know, the wise direction from within.
