The Daily Herald photo contest winners from the month of April.

This photo was taken at the River Trail Nature Center on Sunday during the snowstorm on April 14th. The cardinal was feeding at the feeder and it took me several attempts to catch him flying in midair but I finally did it!

This is a photo of a baby Black Crowned Night Heron taken at The Graue Mill in Oakbrook. This type of night heron is rather rare in our area. I thought the marking on the bird were really beautiful. They do look completely different in coloring at full maturity.

After several months of poor weather in Iceland, the sun finally broke out. Seeing the Gulfoss Waterfall with the sun shining was a rare treat.

Beachcombers pose for a group silhouette reflected in a pair of sunglasses at sunset. I captured the photo this April during a visit to Captiva Island on Florida's Gulf Coast.

I composed this photo while standing below the enormous cast iron chandelier at the Biltmore Estate near Asheville, N.C. The geometry of the chandelier's three rings and intricate staircase railings ascending to the fourth floor interested me.

A photo of a cardinal in our snow-covered linden tree taken on April 14. It was a point of beauty on a snowy day.

Attached is photo from Grand Cayman. It's a favorite of mine. The colorful flowers in focus while the boat, the water, and the dark, stormy afternoon sky are all blurred.

Many people are happy that winter is over, but not this Siberian husky.

This is a photo I took in the gardens at the Pittock Mansion in Portland Oregon. I had been shooting garden and landscape photos when this opportunity was encountered, since it was not staged, I had to quickly zoom in and focus, composition (light, subject focus, etc.) was natural and would quickly be lost. I like the contrasts and similarities between the statue, in stone, and the young woman in wonderfully colored dress, both gracefully cradling and holding circular shapes.

I took this photo at a bird rookery in Orlando Florida on 3-28-19 of a mom egret feeding her baby egrets. New beginnings! (Future punk rockers).

March 19, 2019, New York City. I was fortunate to be in New York City a few days after The Vessel sculpture, in the Hudson Yards area, opened to the public. Climbing to the top of the honeycomb of interwoven stairs provided a great view down into the blue "eye" at the base.

In the Saguaro National Park just outside of Tucson. There had been some recent rain and the desert was green and the sun was breaking through.

Super Moon over Naples, FL. I like the composition. Centered full moon, colors (Clouds and tree) on the left and openness on the right.

A young couple watch the afterglow of a beautiful sunset from Blind Pass Beach on Sanibel Island, Florida. We traveled with friends to the island this April, where I enjoyed capturing this quiet moment with its beauty and grace.
