St. Charles Arts Council presents jazz great Fareed Haque in concert

The St. Charles Arts Council is delighted to announce that jazz great Fareed Haque will be performing in St. Charles at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, with his trio and local student musicians sitting in, plus the Alex Murphy Quartet, as part of the Student Artist Event presented by the arts council in partnership with Northern Illinois University.

The arts council is underwriting the concert as well as a Master Class given by Haque immediately preceding the concert at 5 p.m.

The arts council is making this Master Class free to students interested in learning from this modern guitar virtuoso.

Both the Master Class and the concert will be at the Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles. Ample parking is available in the lot north of the building and the parking garage across Second Street from the Baker.

Tickets are on sale now for $20 to hear this jazz legend. Seating is limited.

Haque has performed all over the world, including the Montreux Jazz Festival, and has played with a variety of musicians, including Sting, David Sanborn, and the Chicago Sinfonietta. As a professor at NIU, Haque is suited to this student event, mentoring these young artists and incorporating their amazing talent into the concert.

Fareed Haque has played guitar all over the world. Steeped in classical and jazz traditions, his unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. T

Haque has been featured on WTTW's ArtBeat and Chicago Tonight, Ben Sidran's New visions, Michelob Presents Sunday Night with David Sanborn on NBC, his own Lonesome Pines special for PBS, and on BET cable jazz channel. Fareed has twice been selected as Talent Deserving Wider Recognition in Downbeat Magazine. In 1988, Haque also joined the faculty at Northern Illinois University as professor of jazz and classical guitar. He continues to teach at NIU to this day. Voted "Best World Guitarist" by Guitar Player Magazine in 2009, His acclaimed 2009 release Flat Planet was twice #1 on the World Jazz Radio charts.
