Weather causes Bartlett’s Eastview Middle School to close
Elgin Area School District U-46 is open today, but Eastview Middle School students in Bartlett have the day off because of the weather.
A sewer backup forced Superintendent Jose Torres to close the middle school Thursday morning. Patrick Mogge, director of school and community relations, said by early afternoon that was the only school where the effects of the storm reached inside the building.
Elgin High School, though, is near significant flooding on Maroon and Varsity drives. Mogge said the district’s transportation department has been working with Elgin police to navigate the streets. High school students remain in class.
Some bus routes were interrupted Thursday morning because of the rain and flooding. Mogge said all of the issues have been handled on a case-by-case basis without major disruptions districtwide.
The sewer problems at Eastview Middle School, however, will affect all of the younger students who buy lunches.
“We have a commissary over there, which produces meals for the elementary school kids,” Mogge said, “so tomorrow will be a cold lunch day.”
Thursday’s lunches were already prepared before the storm hit.
