Letter to the Editor from the League of Women Voters, Glenview
Dear Editor:
The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that the proliferation of semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammo clips is a major health and safety threat. The League supports strong federal and state measures to limit the accessibility and regulate the ownership of these items by private citizens. The League believes that there should be enforcement of strict penalties for improper possession of and crimes committed with assault weapons and high- capacity ammo clips and the adequate allocation of resources to better regulate and monitor gun dealers.
Large capacity ammunition magazines have made possible some of the worst mass murders ever committed because large capacity ammunition magazines enable a shooter to rapidly fire off many rounds without having to reload the firearm.
Given the heartbreaking killing of young, innocent children in what should have been a safe learning environment, it is clearly time that our state and federal legislators prohibit the buying of guns with large capacity magazines and make it very hard rather than very easy for questionable people to purchase such firearms.
Most Americans, and most gun owners, seem to indicate that they would support such sensible gun policies. This is not about being “anti-gun” or “gun control”, this is about sensible gun policies for our health and safety. Please join the League of Women Voters in requesting that our legislators pass such sensible laws, thus becoming good ancestors to our children.
