Schaumburg library celebrates opening of Teen Place

Visitors to the Schaumburg Township District Library have seen a large section of the second floor walled off since February. Now the walls have come down, and the new 6,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Teen Place is open for business.

Teens began streaming in on Wednesday, Nov. 7, but the official Grand Opening is taking place from 1-5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, on the second floor of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Prior to the Grand Opening, the library will hold its final 50th anniversary celebration in the lobby from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All ages are invited to both events.

The anniversary celebration will include free cookies, a prize wheel and historical video presentation in the lobby, with a historical photo display on the second floor. The video includes interviews with several longtime residents, library staff members and local officials, who have witnessed the changes in the library since its humble beginnings 50 years ago. Stop by the cookie table for a sweet treat, and give the prize wheel a spin to win a little something to take home.

The Teen Place Grand Opening will begin with a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m., followed by an open house in which everyone can tour Teen Place and see demonstrations of its Smart Board, Digital Production Studio, Collaboration Stations, DJ equipment and more. After touring Teen Place, head toward the back to receive a thank-you gift for visiting the library's newest addition.

To celebrate the grand opening, Teen Place is hosting a teen Variety Show beginning at 3 p.m. in the Program Room. Students in grades 7-12 will entertain in the performance area, and all ages are welcome to attend. Come for laughs, music and many other forms of classic variety show amusement.

After the Grand Opening, Teen Place will be open to teens ages 12-19 during library hours. Adults are welcome to use the Teen Place Discussion Rooms 9 a.m. — 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, except on school holidays.
