St. Viator takes first in state cheerleading competition

St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights took first place Saturday in the state cheerleading championships in Bloomington, competing in the mid-sized teams category.

A number of other suburban schools snagged lower rankings in the competition, led by Timothy Christian High School, which won second place for small teams, and Barrington High School, which took second for coed team results.

Other teams from the North and West suburbs that ranked in the top 10 in respective categories included:

Ÿ Mid-size teams — Vernon Hills, 4th; Wauconda, 6th; Antioch, 8th; Grayslake North, 9th; Richmond-Burton, 10th.

Ÿ Large teams — Conant in Hoffman Estates, 5th; Neuqua Valley in Naperville, 8th.

Ÿ Coed teams — Buffalo Grove, 3rd; Downers Grove South, 4th; Grant in Fox Lake, 5th; Mundelein, 6th; Lake Park in Roselle, 7th; Downers Grove North, 9th.

Only 100 teams from around the state were invited to compete in the state championships. Fifty of those teams were eliminated in Friday's competition. The remaining 50 battled for the titles Saturday.
