Katie Buczynski continues to do it all for Lake Zurich's first-place softball team.
The hard-throwing senior righty pitched a 4-hitter over 6 innings Wednesday to lead the Bears to a 5-0 win over visiting Warren.
Buczynski also belted her fourth home run of the season and knocked in a pair of runs, as Lake Zurich improved to 14-5 overall and 7-0 in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division.
Buczynski struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Coryn Schmit went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI for the Bears, and Alex Block had a double.
Jenna Anderson was 2-for-3 for Warren (13-12, 5-4). Kellie Kraft cracked a double for the Blue Devils.
Grant 7, Highland Park 1: Heather Ruetsche earned the win, striking out eight, and pounded 3 hits to lead the Bulldogs in nonconference action.
Jamie Swanson had 2 hits and 3 RBI for Grant (7-10). Amanda Villagomez doubled.
Vernon Hills 4, Wauconda 3: Erin Christensen drove in her sister Anna from second base with a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The victory kept Vernon Hills (19-3, 7-0) perfect in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Adriana Longobardi went 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for the Cougars. Anna Christensen also doubled, while Jackie Allen (1 earned run, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks) improved to 12-1.
Wauconda fell to 11-8, 4-3).
Carmel 3, Cary-Grove 2: The Corsairs tied the nonconference game in the sixth and won it in the bottom of the seventh.
Rachel Tack pitched a complete-game 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts for Carmel (9-11). Shea Crowley paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Zion-Benton 6, Grayslake North 3: Kelly Noesen was 2-for-3 for the host Knights in the nonconference game.
Grayslake North fell to 7-12.
Baseball
Lake Zurich 3, Libertyville 1: Joey DeBernardis hit a walk-off homer, his ninth of the season, with one on and two out in the 10th inning.
Lake Zurich improved to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the North Suburban Lake Division.
Libertyville's Troy Barton and Lake Zurich's Brock Simon engaged in a pitchers into the sixth inning. Steve Cleary (2-for-4) gave the Bears the lead in the sixth with a two-out single.
But Libertyville answered with the tying run in the seventh, knocking out Simon, who was replaced by DeBernardis.
In the Lake Zurich 10th, after two were out, Corey Halicke drew a walk. DeBernardis then jacked a towering home run over the left-field fence.
Simon struck out 10 and walked two in 6 innings of work. Barton had 12 strikeouts and 4 walks in 9 innings. He did not suffer the loss.
Chase Guarnaccio was 2-for-5 for Libertyville.
Grayslake North 9, Grayslake Central 7: For the second day in a row, the Knights won a close one over their cross-town rival.
Grayslake North (7-10, 3-4 Fox Valley Fox) received 2 hits apiece from Nick Harrington, Tim Elias (2 RBI), Clay Henricksen (2 RBI), Vinnie Licciardello and Drew Doering. Licciardello and Brandon Schroth had doubles for the visitors, who scored 5 runs in the sixth to wipe out a 4-2 deficit.
Grayslake Central fell to 13-7.
Vernon Hills 6, Wauconda 0: Zach Schwartz pitched a 2-hit shutout, striking out four and walking two in the North Suburban Prairie Division game.
P.J. Marsek had 3 hits and 5 stolen bases for the Cougars. Joe Nichols delivered a 2-run single in a 4-run fifth to break the game open.
Nichols, Brad Schnitzer (double) and Schwartz each had 2 hits in the win.
Lake Forest 6, Antioch 4: Logan Kent was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and an RBI for the visiting Sequoits in the North Suburban crossover.
Gage Ecklund was also 2-for-2 and had a double for Antioch (9-8).
Boys lacrosse
Lake Zurich 7, Grayslake North 3: The Bears received 2 goals apiece from Connor Curley and Caleb Noble.
Scott Eschenbaum, Michael Wright and Andrew Bellville also scored for Lake Zurich (7-3), while goalie Austin Ryan made 14 saves.
Girls soccer
Warren 4, Antioch 0: Natalia Jovanovic scored twice for the Blue Devils in the North Suburban crossover.
Kelsey Armour and Lindsay Goad also scored for Warren (4-7-3).
Carmel 5, Benet 0: Sarah Petermann and Stephanie Swanson each scored twice in the East Suburban Catholic Conference match.
Alex Hauser also had a goal for Carmel 16-1. Petermann's tallies were her 24th and 25th of the season.
Stevenson 2, Mundelein 2: Laura Schroeder scored twice for Stevenson (7-4-1, 3-2-1 North Suburban Lake).
Libertyville 3, Zion-Benton 0: Shel McCracken, Sammie Mack and Caitlyn Wagener scored for the Wildcats in the North Suburban Lake game.
Erin Waehner made 3 saves in earning her sixth shutout for Libertyville (9-2-1, 4-1).
