Ex-Wauconda High booster club treasurer admits to theft

The former treasurer of a Wauconda High School booster club charged with stealing $3,500 from the club pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Tuesday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Deborah Hoy, 49, was placed on court supervision for two years after pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft before Circuit Judge Fred Foreman.

Assistant State's Attorney Ari Fisz said Hoy, of the 300 block of Larkdale Row, was the treasurer of the Wauconda Boosters. The club is a parent group that raises money to support school activities and sponsors student scholarships.

Between January and August of last year, Hoy wrote four checks on the club's account totaling $3,500 and deposited the money in her own bank account.

The thefts were uncovered when club members discovered suspicious transactions, which prompted Hoy to resign and pay back the money.

She was originally charged with felony theft, but Fisz agreed to reduce the charge in return for her guilty plea.

Circuit Judge Fred Foreman also ordered Hoy to perform 100 hours of public service and barred her from serving as a treasurer of any group for two years.
