MCC: Three Founding Faculty Scholarships, each worth 60 credit hours of tuition each at McHenry County College beginning in academic year 2009-2010, are available for MCC students or high school graduates, including June 2009 graduates. The scholarship is intended for full-time students who enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester at MCC and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average while at MCC. The award may be used for tuition only.

The Founding Faculty Scholarships are awarded in recognition of the contribution of retired founding faculty members David B. Hill, John D. Konitzer, and Erwin Cornelius.

Deadline to apply is Feb. 5. Applications are available in the MCC Financial Aid Office, Room A256 at McHenry County College. In addition to documents showing a commitment to learning, applicants must also submit a typed essay describing their most influential teacher. WCC Foundation: The Waubonsee Community College Foundation is offering more than 100 scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. The application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 5. Scholarships are available to both new and returning Waubonsee students. Details and application forms can be found online at www.waubonsee.edu/scholarships. Mediacom: Mediacom Communications is offering $100,000 in scholarship support for high school students who are seniors and plan to obtain further education. For the eighth consecutive year, as many as 100 high school seniors from throughout Illinois and neighboring states will be awarded Mediacom World Class Scholarships worth $1,000 each.

Recipients may use the financial awards to support educational expenses they will incur in the fall of 2009 as they pursue higher education or vocational training from any accredited post-secondary institution. High schools in Mediacom-served communities were sent application materials in early January, and Feb. 15 is the application deadline. Mediacom World Class Scholarships are available to students in Illinois and nine other Midwestern states where Mediacom provides telecommunication services. Scholarship recipients in 2008 included 21 Illinois students. Applicants do not have to be Mediacom customers but must live in areas where Mediacom provides its video, broadband and other digital communication services.

Students are encouraged to contact high school counselors for applications or contact Mediacom directly. The deadline for submitting completed applications is Feb. 15.

All scholarship applications must include a brief essay on leadership, the student's school transcript and two letters of recommendation.

Rotary Club: The Rotary Club of Geneva is now accepting applications for Rotary District 6440 Vocational Scholarships that will be awarded to eligible high school graduates seeking a two-year degree, diploma or certificate.

Two applicants may be sponsored by each Rotary Club in the district, and will be considered for $1,500 to be used for tuition, books, fees, tools and supplies awarded through Rotary District 6440.

Eligibility includes being a high school graduate, GED, or nontraditional student re-entering a college program; applicant must be accepted at school of designation; and must be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Geneva.

District 6440, which includes 72 Rotary clubs in northern Illinois, will award up to 20 scholarships to full-time students seeking a vocational degree or certificate program at an accredited school.

Applications must be received by the Rotary Club of Geneva no later than Friday, Feb. 20 for consideration. Application forms and scholarship information are available for download from Geneva Rotary's Web site at www.genevarotary.org or contact Rotarian Charlie MacBrayne at (630) 675-0447.

Zonta Club: The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia is offering a scholarship to enable girls who complete the sixth grade in June 2009 to explore the world of mathematics and its importance in many career fields. Tuition covers the one-week session held in July 2009 on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb. Titled "Girl's Plus Math Camp", this annual program offers girls the opportunity to learn from professionals about how math impacts their various career fields. By helping girls to understand the many applications of math in the work world, the program seeks to promote a greater interest its study and appreciation of its importance as a life skill. Girls also are given opportunities to work on networking and leadership skills.

Girls completing the sixth grade in spring 2009 in any public or private school within the districts U-46, 301, 302, 303, 304 and 101 areas are eligible. Selection will be based on a strong interest in math and letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselors. Transportation to and from the camp is the responsibility of the recipient; no health or accident insurance is included. Applications for Math Camp scholarships must be submitted no later than Wednesday, Feb. 25. Awards are made in April for the July 2009 program. • The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia is offering scholarships to local area women to continue their education. There are four scholarships being offered.

One scholarship is for young women graduating high school in June 2009. The Luella Hoffman Scholarship is given annually to a public or private school student in districts U-46, 101 or 301, 302, 303 or 304. This award which ranges from $1,500-$2,500 is to be applied to tuition, books and fees for a full-time two- or four-year program of study. Selection is based on academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities, financial need, and the applicant's expressed objectives and goals.

Two scholarships are for women currently in college or looking to re-enter. The 2nd Chance Scholarship is designed to help a woman 25 or older who desires to continue her education on a full or part-time basis at any institution of higher learning in Kane or adjacent counties. This $500 per semester award is based on sincerity of purpose, financial need and academic aptitude.

The Jane Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is for any woman entering her third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in a business-related field. The award of $500 is based on outstanding academic achievement in business-related subjects and future academic and career goals. There is also a district competition for $400 paid in September with the district winner competing for a $4,000 award from Zonta International paid in December.

Applications for scholarships must be submitted no later than Feb. 25. Awards are made in April for the fall 2009 school year. Carl J. Mitchell Memorial Conservation Scholarship: The McHenry County Conservation District is encouraging area high school students to submit their applications for the District's Carl J. Mitchell Memorial Conservation Scholarship, due March 1. Any McHenry County high school student considering a career in conservation is eligible to apply. The Mitchell Scholarship is an endowed scholarship fund that assists high school students in covering their fees to attend environmental workshops, camps, career seminars and other related events of their choice. It is not intended for funding college fees or tuition. Selection criteria for recipients will include the potential of the program to provide the student with meaningful exposure to environmental careers; a student's history of volunteerism; and participation in extracurricular activities. Applications are due by March 1. Interested students should send a letter of application that tells about themselves, describes the event they have chosen, why they wish to attend and how it fits the goals of the scholarship program. A brochure or other publication about the event should be included with the application. Township Officials of Illinois: St. Charles Township is announcing the Township Officials of Illinois scholarship program for graduating high school seniors planning to attend an Illinois college or university in the fall of 2009. The program, sponsored by the state association, is for deserving Illinois students that have demonstrated a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and serve their respective communities. TOI will award seven $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend Illinois colleges or universities this fall. Applications as well as eligibility criteria may be obtained at the TOI Web site, toi.org, or by contacting the St. Charles Township offices at 1725 Dean St. or at your high school's guidance office. "This program gives Illinois students an opportunity to learn more about the government closest to the people, township government, as well as a financial boost," said Johnson.

The Township Officials of Illinois is a private, nonprofit organization that currently represents 99 percent of the state's 1,433 townships. TOI has maintained a scholarship program since 1982.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with and help students who will one day run this country," said TOI Executive Director Bryan Smith.

Hansen-Furnas Foundation: The Hansen-Furnas Foundation Inc., a nonprofit, charitable organization, announces the scholarship applications for the 2009-10 school year are now available. The application deadline for college and university undergraduate scholarships is March 1 of each year. Prospective students living within a 12-mile radius of Batavia, or in Clarke County, Iowa, are eligible to apply.

Criteria for granting scholarship awards are based primarily on financial need and academic scholarship. Character references, the quality of the applicant's letter of intent, and work experience are also considered to ensure successful selections. The general undergraduate scholarships offer payment toward tuition and fees for students pursuing studies at any accredited college or university. The William Carlyle Furnas scholarship, and Leto M. Fumas scholarship are granted to one individual each year. All applicants must be United States citizens and students must reapply for a scholarship each year.

• Hansen-Furnas Foundation. Inc. General Undergraduate Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to individuals planning to enroll, or enrolled, as undergraduate students. These awards offer a maximum of $3,000 per year.

William Carlyle Furnas Undergraduate Scholarship: This full-tuition scholarship is awarded to a student planning to enroll, or enrolled, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Furnas Electric Company founder Carl Furnas graduated from Purdue in 1908.

• Leto M. Furnas Graduate Scholarship for Women: This scholarship is awarded to a woman planning to enroll, or currently enrolled in, a postgraduate degree. The award is named for Leto M. Furnas, spouse of Furnas Electric Company founder William Carlyle Furnas. This tuition award is a maximum of $5,000 per grant.

William Carlyle Furnas, and Hansen-Furnas Foundation Scholarship applications are now available in your local area high school guidance counselor's office. Delnor Auxiliary: The Delnor Auxiliary offers five $1,000 scholarships to qualifying high school seniors who are planning to pursue careers in a health care field. The Margery Clark Burgess Memorial Scholarship is available to a graduating senior from St. Charles Unit District 303. Two Olivia Smart Scholarships and two Delnor Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who reside in Delnor's primary service area. By February, guidelines and applications will be available in all area high school guidance offices, as well as in Delnor's volunteer services office, and online at www.delnorauxiliary.com. Geneva Mother's Club: The Mother's Club of Geneva awards 13 $1,000 scholarships to Geneva residents who are either a high school senior, current college student or adult returning to college for the 2008-2009 academic year. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, community service and academic achievement. The deadline for receiving applications is March 31. Applications can be downloaded from the Mother's Club of Geneva Web site at www.mothersclubofgeneva.com or they are available at the Geneva High School guidance office and the Geneva Public Library.

Streamwood Chamber: The Streamwood Chamber of Commerce is interested in promoting high-potential students from the community and is offering one or more $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships are based on merit, community involvement and essay, and are open to college or technical school bound high school seniors who meet any of the following criteria: student must be a legal resident of Streamwood; or is a legal dependant of any Streamwood Chamber of Commerce member in good standing.

The scholarships are awarded based on several criteria, all of which contribute to an overall score. This score is the primary determining factor in the award. A personal interview with the applicant and the scoring committee may also be held to help determine finalists. The scholarships will be presented during the Chamber Auction and Scholarship Recognition evening on Wednesday, April 22. Finalists, and a parent or guardian, are encouraged to attend this event. Recognition will also be made in front of your peers during the School's Seniors Honors Program. Completed applications are to be returned, postmarked or delivered before Friday, March 27. General Assembly Scholarship: College students residing in the 64th legislative district are invited to pick up a General Assembly Scholarship application from state Rep. Michael Tryon's district office. The General Assembly Scholarship program awards eight one-year, tuition-only scholarships to the University of Illinois or any other public university in the state, and is judged by a scholarship committee, according to Rep. Tryon (R-Crystal Lake). To qualify for the General Assembly Scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

• The student must be enrolled in a degree-granting program for the 2009 Fall and 2010 Spring semesters.

• The student must be a resident of the 64th legislative district.

• The student must show evidence of good grades and leadership potential as demonstrated through extracurricular activities.

• The student must be planning to continue his or her education within the Illinois state university system.

Applications can also be printed off Rep. Tryon's Web site at www.michaeltryon.com. The deadline to submit a scholarship application is March 27 at 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted to Rep. Good Shepherd: The Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital offers scholarships for students residing in the hospital service area who will attend a college or university in Illinois and pursue an education in a health-related field.

The service area includes the following ZIP codes: 60010, 60012, 60013, 60014, 60021, 60042, 60047, 60050, 60051, 60060, 60067, 60073, 60084, 60098, 60102, 60110 and 60156.

The number of scholarships to be awarded will be based on the numbers and qualifications of applicants. Current references, transcripts and proof of acceptance from the institution and acceptance into a health care professional program are required. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of attitude and desire toward education, leadership, citizenship, personality and financial need.

Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered and filed with the Auxiliary Scholarship Committee no later than April 30. Finalists will be interviewed at Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington. Recipients will be notified by early June. Delnor Health Care Foundation: The Delnor Health Care Foundation offers the Charles Hanson, M.D. Scholarship to qualifying students. The scholarship endowment was established in 1999 by the Delnor staff and medical community to honor the dedication pediatrician Dr. Hanson demonstrated to families in the Fox Valley area for so many years.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must a Delnor volunteer, medical staff member, employee or a relative of one of these, an employee of a Delnor-affiliated physician, or resident of a community served by Delnor Health System. Those communities include Aurora, Batavia, DeKalb, Geneva, Elburn, Elgin, Kaneville, LaFox, Maple Park, Mooseheart, North Aurora, St. Charles, South Elgin, Sugar Grove, Sycamore, Virgil, Wasco, Wayne and West Chicago.

Applicants must also have been accepted to a medical school, graduate program, or professional program, with all applicable undergraduate/prerequisites completed and be pursuing a medically related career. Examples of qualifying study include nursing, medicine and physical therapy. Previous award recipients are welcomed to reapply for the scholarship award. Applications are due by May 1.
