Carl J. Mitchell Memorial Conservation Scholarship: The McHenry County Conservation District is encouraging area high school students to submit their applications for the District's Carl J. Mitchell Memorial Conservation Scholarship, due March 1. Any McHenry County high school student considering a career in conservation is eligible to apply. The Mitchell Scholarship is an endowed scholarship fund that assists high school students in covering their fees to attend environmental workshops, camps, career seminars and other related events of their choice. It is not intended for funding college fees or tuition. Selection criteria for recipients will include the potential of the program to provide the student with meaningful exposure to environmental careers; a student's history of volunteerism; and participation in extracurricular activities. Applications are due by March 1. Interested students should send a letter of application that tells about themselves, describes the event they have chosen, why they wish to attend and how it fits the goals of the scholarship program. A brochure or other publication about the event should be included with the application. Township Officials of Illinois: St. Charles Township is announcing the Township Officials of Illinois scholarship program for graduating high school seniors planning to attend an Illinois college or university in the fall of 2009. The program, sponsored by the state association, is for deserving Illinois students that have demonstrated a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and serve their respective communities. TOI will award seven $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend Illinois colleges or universities this fall. Applications as well as eligibility criteria may be obtained at the TOI Web site, toi.org, or by contacting the St. Charles Township offices at 1725 Dean St. or at your high school's guidance office. Illinois Sheriff's Association Scholarship: Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500. This is part of the Illinois Sheriff's Association Scholarship program where the ISA hands out over $53,000 in college scholarships throughout the state to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The student must be enrolled full time at a certified intuition of higher learning in the state of Illinois. There are no restrictions on any applicant by reasons of age, race, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only restrictions are as follows: applicants must be a permanent Illinois resident; scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state; and students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2009-10 school year (excluding summer session). Applications are now available at the sheriff's department or on the Internet at www.ilsheriff.org. Streamwood Chamber: The Streamwood Chamber of Commerce is interested in promoting high-potential students from the community and is offering one or more $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships are based on merit, community involvement and essay, and are open to college or technical school bound high school seniors who meet any of the following criteria: a legal resident of Streamwood; or is a legal dependant of any chamber member in good standing. The scholarships are awarded based on several criteria, all of which contribute to an overall score. This score is the primary determining factor in the award. A personal interview with the applicant and the scoring committee may also be held to help determine finalists. The scholarships will be presented during the chamber auction and scholarship recognition evening on April 22. Completed applications are to be returned, postmarked or delivered before March 27. General Assembly Scholarship: College students residing in the 64th legislative district are invited to pick up a General Assembly Scholarship application from state Rep. Michael Tryon's district office. The General Assembly Scholarship program awards eight one-year, tuition-only scholarships to the University of Illinois or any other public university in the state, and is judged by a scholarship committee, according to Rep. Tryon (R-Crystal Lake).
To qualify for the General Assembly Scholarship, students must: be enrolled in a degree-granting program for the 2009 fall and 2010 spring semesters; be a resident of the 64th legislative district; show evidence of good grades and leadership potential as demonstrated through extracurricular activities; and be planning to continue his or her education within the Illinois state university system. Applications can also be printed off www.michaeltryon.com. The deadline is March 27 at 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted to Rep. Tryon's district office at 1 N. Virginia St. in Crystal Lake. McHenry County Civil War Round Table: The McHenry County Civil War Round Table will award one scholarship for $1,000 to a high school senior in McHenry County. The award is based on written essays submitted to a panel of members who will grade the entries on the basis of originality, grammatical construction, neatness, and evidence of student research on a chosen topic. This year, the essay should be no more than 500 words. Forms have been mailed to all guidance counselors at McHenry County high schools. Dundee Township Garden Club: The Garden Club of Dundee Township is accepting applications for scholarships from students of Community Unit District 300. Qualifying applicants must be a graduating senior, college freshman, sophomore, or junior. Eligible students must be pursuing a career in horticulture or other environmentally related studies. Northern Fox Valley WIM: The Northern Fox Valley Chapter of Women in Management is seeking applicants to award two $1,000 scholarships in memory of its former chapter administrator, Susan Wyatt. Two $1,000 Susan Wyatt Memorial WIM Scholarships will be awarded this year to two area women. Deadline for completed applications is April 30. Applicants must be women who: live or attend college in Kane or DeKalb counties, or Cook County west of Route 59; are at least 21 years of age and working toward a degree; have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale; indicate financial need; and are able to articulate career goals and have management as a career goal, or working towards a certification/degree to become a licensed professional. Applicants need not be a member. The scholarship recipient will become an associate member of Women in Management for one year, and will be invited to attend monthly meetings in 2009-10. Finalists may be required to attend an interview either in person or via conference call. Scholarships will be awarded at the June 11 Northern Fox Valley Chapter meeting at the Elgin Country Club. Good Shepherd: The Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital offers scholarships for students residing in the hospital service area who will attend a college or university in Illinois and pursue an education in a health-related field. The service area includes the following ZIP codes: 60010, 60012, 60013, 60014, 60021, 60042, 60047, 60050, 60051, 60060, 60067, 60073, 60084, 60098, 60102, 60110 and 60156. The number of scholarships to be awarded will be based on the numbers and qualifications of applicants. Current references, transcripts and proof of acceptance from the institution and acceptance into a health care professional program are required. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of attitude and desire toward education, leadership, citizenship, personality and financial need. Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered and filed with the Auxiliary Scholarship Committee no later than April 30. Recipients will be notified by early June. Delnor Health Care Foundation: The Delnor Health Care Foundation offers the Charles Hanson, M.D. Scholarship to qualifying students. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must a Delnor volunteer, medical staff member, employee or a relative of one of these, an employee of a Delnor-affiliated physician, or resident of a community served by Delnor Health System. Those communities include Aurora, Batavia, DeKalb, Geneva, Elburn, Elgin, Kaneville, LaFox, Maple Park, Mooseheart, North Aurora, St. Charles, South Elgin, Sugar Grove, Sycamore, Virgil, Wasco, Wayne and West Chicago. Applicants must also have been accepted to a medical school, graduate program, or professional program, with all applicable undergraduate/prerequisites completed and be pursuing a medically related career. Examples of qualifying study include nursing, medicine and physical therapy. Previous award recipients are welcomed to reapply for the scholarship award. Applications are due by May 1.
